For the cost etc of the new tanks and modification, I think I would consider just asking the propane service to do the removal and reinstall of the tanks when filling. A little green $ can be a very convincing motivator. Our big tanks don't need refilling that often even when using all the appliances, unless of course you are using the onboard propane generator. Heck at $5 or $10 extra per fill for the service you could fill quite a few times before ever reaching the break even on the cost of new tanks etc. K.I.S.S.
Not every place of course would be willing even for a little extra dough and of course when traveling that could be a bit of a pain.
