A possible solution might be here on a side door truck camper:

Permanantly mount a long light weight aluminum box horizontally on the back of my camper between the tail lights with the door facing the rear. If the box is higher than the generator access door it would still be no higher than shoulder high for removing, filling, and replacing.
Fixed ASME tanks would be nice inside the aluminum box
Or.... more likely:
Mount the horizontal 30# propane DOT tanks inside the aluminum box with the regulator between them. There would be room for longer (i.e., 40#) tanks if needed.
