I think we are brought up with this sort of unspoken law that a person's money is his business - don't talk or ask about money. Then people look at what their neighbors are doing and think they need the same thing. If they don't have the cash they go deeper into debt. The good thing is that overspending stimulates the economy. The bad thing is people don't learn proper money management skills and with employee pension plans no longer as popular as they once were people are going to have to work till they drop. Or maybe those who have managed their money well will be taxed to support those who haven't.
