To you and to many, including myself, I try to make sound financial choices that will benefit my family. I have no problem driving a used truck, but it's not really my place to judge others because I have screwed up many times myself and could be judged harshly.
If westernrvparkowner buying a $1000 fishing rod makes him happy and he can afford it, then why not splurge on yourself every once in a while. I've probably got close to 6K or more in camera equipment with one lens costing over $1000. Some people are quite content with the photos they take off their smart phone. It's all a matter of perspective.
However, IMHO, he still traded down a model level, but if it works for him then go for it.
