You can make the "not buy or buy used" argument for any purchase. What you cannot factor into that equation is the value to you of that purchase. I recently bought a $1000.00 fly rod. I would catch more fish with a $10 Zebco Snoopy rod and reel set. I am sure that given enough years, that $990 difference could grow to millions. But I don't want millions on my 169th birthday, I want the feeling that rod gives me today. You can make the mathematically smart decision every day of your life and miss life completely.
It's not about scrimping and saving so you have a gazillion dollars when your dead. It's about trying to envision your entire life so you can plan to make the most of it. Most people who spend their pennies freely when they are younger won't have dollars to spend freely down the road. When a 25 year old kid without a wife or child says, "I want this new truck now....I could care less about helping my daughter go to university 20 years down the road" he is really showing that he lacks insight to his future self.
Or at 25 no wife, no kids, maybe the best thing he ever did. May decide pretty quickly it was a less than stellar decision and never repeat it again.
Doing something at 25 with 40 years left to work, is quite a bit different, than being 55. And having no savings, house etc, and doing the same thing
