Doing something at 25 with 40 years left to work, is quite a bit different, than being 55. And having no savings, house etc, and doing the same thing
Purchasing a brand new truck at 25 that takes all his resources might be enough to set the ball in motion so that at 55 he doesn't have much.
For instance it could mean that the purchase of the truck prevented him from coming up with a down payment on a $300,000 house. Then came a marriage to pay for and after supporting a wife and two little kids while wasting money on rent it takes till he is 38 to some up with a down payment on that same house that is now $500,000.
Good lord you are a pessimist 4x4, he has 40 plus years to work. He has lots of time to recover.
Few years of hard work, making those payments, he will soon realize that male ego stroke he got was not worth it. Or he may not, and continue the same behavior his whole life.
Do I think his choice, was shall we stay less than stellar ( as in stupid)? You bet.
Revisit it in 5 years, hopefully he has changed
