So he works harder at his job, gets rewarded with promotions. That new truck is his pride and joy so he takes care of it. One day it catches the eye of a cute young lady while he is washing it at the carwash. They strike up a conversation, then a friendship and then a relationship. They marry, have great kids and live a great life. Without that new truck and the responsibility and pride that came with it, he might have ended up Breaking Bad. Or at 25 no wife, no kids, maybe the best thing he ever did. May decide pretty quickly it was a less than stellar decision and never repeat it again.
Doing something at 25 with 40 years left to work, is quite a bit different, than being 55. And having no savings, house etc, and doing the same thing
Purchasing a brand new truck at 25 that takes all his resources might be enough to set the ball in motion so that at 55 he doesn't have much.
For instance it could mean that the purchase of the truck prevented him from coming up with a down payment on a $300,000 house. Then came a marriage to pay for and after supporting a wife and two little kids while wasting money on rent it takes till he is 38 to some up with a down payment on that same house that is now $500,000.
....And maybe that shiny new truck catches the eye of the hottest babe around. You know, the one making big $$$ as a young executive. Between the two of them with their work ethic, they are making good money. When they settle down and start life together they are set.
Now if he was driving some old smoking rust bucket they would have passed like two ships in the night.
