My employer started mandatory retirement deductions when I was in my 20s. You should have heard the grumbling about that from my fellow workers. Bet they aren't grumbling now.
The only guy I knew who was investing his money on his own was a fellow who bought houses to rent. If he kept that up, he's probably a very wealthy man by now.
