How do you run the breakaway cable to the tow vehicle?

I am replacing my breakaway switch and wanted to know how the cable should be run to the tow vehicle to keep it off the ground but still be able to function if needed. It seems like the cable they supply is pretty long and would be easy to drag or get caught up on something. The original cable was inter wound with the tow chain...is this the way it should be run?

Thanks,

  • Similar to the above post by Downtheroad I used aircraft cable and u-bolts (screws...there small) to create a cable with enough play but not too long.
  • Never been a fan of tangling the breakaway cable through the chains
So, I made a new shorter one.
    All from Home Depot.

    Wire rope
    ferrule
