How do you summer travel?

If the rules at an average campground (quiet hours, dogs on leash, parking only at your site etc.) run afoul of how you wish to overnight, it is better for both you and the campgrounds that you do avoid them at all costs.

I've done the walmart overnight with genset powered A/C in a pinch. It's a nice option to have.

However I prefer to stay in a CG when traveling if possible.

Walmart is NOT my prefered method of traveling.

We do the 300 mile or 6 hour drive and have reservations for every stop. Overnights are usually KOA or similar, with full hookup pull throughs. We don’t boondock or stay at Mall-Wart.
Our long trips are planned months in advance.
We stay 2 weeks at a COE the beginning of summer right after school is out, then stay at home until school starts back. Most parks and places of interest are less crowded then.

I make as few reservations as possible. Usually only if I want to be at a specific destination on a set date or holiday is involved. While traveling I generally go about 300 miles and stop at a campground. Very seldom is there a problem of availability of one site for one night.

We are not " campers " , we are travelers . We stop when and were we want . We spent 60 days on the road last summer and spent one nite in campground . A few Wal-Marts , boat launches , friends drive ways , museum parking lots even a couple police stations and hospitals . What I have against campgrounds is all lectures , rules and questions that registration requires .
I own 3 generators , all quiet . A Honda 3500 , a Honda 2100 and a Champion 34 or 35 hundred . Mostly we stay north so we seldom use the generator .
As I say we are " travelers " who drag around our bed and bath . We have had 14 different RVs from 20 foot TT , 34 and a 36 foot 5er , many class Cs and a 36 foot diesel pusher . Three truck campers .

We go further, up to 600 miles in a day, but otherwise do the same thing for the same reason.

As for electric, we point the top of the trailer at the sky and get it for free (after the initial capital investment for solar panels and charge controller) with no noise or mess from the sun. We have a 320 watt array.

That's pretty much what we do.

The two long trips we've done, down the east coast to Disney World, we stopped halfway. First time was at a hotel, second time was at a campground for an overnight.

For camping in general, we plan "rustic" campgrounds (without power) for spring and fall camping, full hookups for middle of summer.

I agree with the above. It is real nice being over 62 and can stay in Corp of Engineer Parks at half price with the national Park pass. Also some National Forest campgrounds have electric hookups and with the national Park pass. Next comes Passport America. You can usually find a park for about $20 or a little less. Many cities and counties also have low priced campgrounds that are nice. I do check campground reviews on all parks before staying. Back in the day, I also wanted to stay at Walmart, but for me I found them too noisy to get a good night sleep. Enjoy camping
