How do you tell when your waste tanks are full?

Our camper has indicator lights on the range hood that profess to show the level in each of the waste tanks. But I'm not sure I can trust the lights. I don't want to pull up stakes and go looking ...

When I am ankle deep in shower water the grey tank is full.
Flashlight down the hole and its at or above the pipe collar the black tank is full.

Thats my method.
I don't even bother with the indicator panel. It tells me lies every time.
