Who cares if they touch, if you are moving 5'! If it gets you moving and you drive 5 miles an hour no problem. But the moment you get back to hard pack or PAVEMENT then I either you keep going at 5 MPH or you get it aired back up. Highway speed with the duallies touching, no way!
Brian: thoroughly enjoyed reading your post.
I watched a BFG company airing down instructional "video" on Youtube about 2 years ago. The Chap was out in the desert in South Africa (or, Namibia...can't recall which), and was showing sand extrication techniques, airing down, and airing up. The tires were BFG TA / Ko (not a .5 rim, of course). His main point was: NEVER EVER drive over ~30 or ~40 KPH with these tires when they are aired down. Make sure they are aired back up when you are back on the tarmac, doing higher speeds, or you will trash the tires within minutes (the damage may not be immediately apparent, but all 4 will be severely structurally compromized, and you'' be taking your life in your hands driving on them at all).
Now, the above relates to BFG TA / Ko rubber; I have no idea how this situation would translate to any other brand.
