We fill the fresh water tank and leave the city water turned off until we need to refill the tank. Also turn off the pump when we leave for the day (when we remember to do so, anyway).
The only mental effort involved is remembering to turn off the city water before the fresh water tank overfills. Forgot once - the overflow line got a good cleaning.
Locking the bin doors is a good idea. A door on a MH we test drove kept popping open while driving.
