The 6L and 6.4L engines are OK when you have a coolant water filter on the engine. International did a 'soft' recall, and installed a water coolant filter on all the trucks with these engines in International heavy duty trucks. But Ford did not do the same thing. International did not have nearly the problem with the filtered engines as Ford did.
It is easy to install a filter, and I put one on my 97 motorhome with a 460" gas engine in it. After 1 year (and it was brand new) the filter was plugged, and the heater stops working. I replaced the filter and took apart the first one. It looked like sand or something like borax in the filter. So the filter takes a lot of minerals out of the water, and keeps the water pump seal in great shape. At 18 years old, I have not replaced any 5/8" heater hose lines, they are still in great shape. I did replace all the 2" lines on the engine to radiator though at 10 years, they looked pristine inside! But I changed them anyway.
I only added distilled water to the engine - except changed the fluid at 10 years old with the new hoses. New filter each fall. Added SCA's a couple of times. Supplemental Coolant additives. I bought all the filters at Napa. FIL 4070 is the normal size filter. FIL 4071 is a little taller, and some have SCA's already in them. The 4070 is 'dry' - no SCA's. The kit to install it is FIL 4019.
Good luck!
