Usually once before a trip, and then visually before coming home. I've found I can sometimes see whether they are low, and if there's a question I will check them again. Here's a key point I've learned: Don't check them the morning of leaving. Check them a day or even two before.
I had one valve stem malf while checking it which caused the tire to empty and had to remove it and put on the spare in my driveway the day of leaving. I even installed a new core from my tool kit and it still wouldn't seal. If you do it beforehand, you still have time to get a new stem installed without the pressure of "right now".
