We carry 2x5G tall, thin, plastic jerry cans behind the rear wheel wells anchored by a strong nylon strap with an aligator clamp fastened to 2 "O" rings bolted to the box. As long as the cap is tightened securely, no fumes will escape and you could hang the truck from these straps, that's how strong and secure they are. (OK, a bit of an exaggeration.)
