If you get 8 to ten miles a gallon towing why risk blowing yourself up for a extra 20 miles and still have to stop and put gas in vechile anyways. If you run out I am sure Good Sam will be happy to come to your rescue
Do you have links to ANY cases or articles of someone blowing themselves up by transporting 5 gallons of gas in (or on) their vehicle? I have had to wait over 4 hours for a tow truck to come, and that was in a populated metro Atlanta suburb. I can imagine how long a potential wait could be in a more remote area for GS to bring a couple of gallons of gas.
Not to mention that there are about a million square miles of the intermountain West without any cellphone coverage and due to low population density it's where you're most likely to have a problem with fuel availablity. I did a 280 mile stretch with two gas stations in NM, one was closed so I came close to needing my reserve fuel. Luckily the second station was open. The other reason to carry some is disasters, fuel can become temporarily unavailable due to a variety of issues, not generally an issue with a car but with a trailer being able to adjust and get to a campground where you can wait it out could be useful.
