How to get rid of spoiled food smell?

Hello all. Been lurking a bit. Great forum. I've been renting/borrowing TTs for a while now and I think it is time to make the purchase. I've found my second choice floor-plan about 5 hours away. It seems to be priced pretty well, but the only problem is that there was food left in the fridge (Hence the decent price). The dealer has dismantled the fridge, cleaned it and it is still airing out. But I think after a month of airing, the smell may never go away. I'm thinking even if I replace the fridge, the smell might be in the wallcovering and fabrics. Any thoughts or experience with this? Should I offer really low and pray I can get the smell out?

  • Good answers, all, to your question, OP. I would add, it depends on what your patience/work limits are and how much the price can come down. You will have to spend some time on this issue to get it successfully resolved. Up to you how much that's worth. I would also suggest putting some cotton balls, soaked in vanilla extract on a plate in strategic locations in the 'fridge and elsewhere in the rig. X2 on the Fabreeze. Good luck and happy camping.
  • If the dealer won't come down enough to pay for replacement fridge and refurbishing of fabrics in the living room area then I suggest you find another trailer. Personally speaking I would not buy a trailer or car with someone else's stink (let alone persistent rotten food) in it. But that's me.
  • I had that happen to a seasonal rv. I used Clorox clean up and it took the smell out. It took a few cleanings and time.
  • If the spoiled food has been in there very long, it will get into the plastic interior walls. Unfortunately, in most cases, you will never get it out.
  • Try charcoal, or just beat him down enough so you can just replace it.
  • time heals all?

How about febreeze fabric stuff...spray the hell out of your fabrics and leave unit it open for several dry days...closing at night of course...let it dry and air well!
  • Place an open box of Baking Soda in it, and let it soak up the smell.
  • Definitely offer low, you can always go higher.

I've found that baking soda makes a great cleaner for appliances. Make a paste of the powder and spread it on, keeping it wet occasionally and adding more powder. If left to work for a few days, it should clean it up and the smell will be gone.
I used this method to clean the baked on grease and food spills in an oven that was 40 yrs. old and it cleaned it to a sparkle.
