How to park a Trailer

This I noticed on a European website. It is a form of training they do for new Caravanners
Parking contest
  • That guy definitely knows how to use his mirrors!
    Barney
  • He's pretty good, and this is coming from someone who has backed hundreds of thousands of trailers over my career.
The basics of backing remain the same whether its a 53' trailer or a single axle 15' trailer.
He is very proficient with that setup.
  • Very, very good driving skills. I know I couldn't do this and I have been backing trailers and driving race cars my entire life. I see a lot of green on this forum. :B
  • At first I thought I was watching the video sped up. I think I'd get dizzy maneuvering that fast...very entertaining.

Exactly right. If he is that accurate at warp speed, imagine how precisely he can place the TT when taking his time. This guy is amazing.

  • That is impressive. That driver is way beyond "Place your hand on the lower part of the steering wheel..."
  • It's never about "speed". It's about safety! Just because someone can whip around backwards like a freekin' idiot, doesn't mean he's doing it safe! That's just pure show-off and stupid in my opinion. Although that set-up is in a controlled environment, so under the circumstances presented here, it's OK.

But to do something like that in a camp ground with kids and pets and bicycles and trees and other campers and other vehicles blocking, even parked in your spot sometimes, and single lane roads and low hanging trees and electric shore power posts and fire pits to navigate around is quite a different matter.

If that same driver had a tandem axle trailer (not a single axle) that is 35 feet long, make that tow vehicle 22 feet long with dual rear wheels, and invest over $100,000 of his own money into a trailer and tow vehicle and see how fast and nimble that driver becomes! Take him off a completely cleared parking lot with rubber cones as guides, give him obsticles that have to be navigated around with it's raining hurricane strength force, with windows fogged, rain covered, or AT NIGHT! And see how proficient he becomes!

Great, now let’s see him do that in a campground?
Probably hits every tree, pole and bush there is! Not too mention using every site around him!

    Pretty good skills.

If I had the time to practice, I could probably pilot a Space Shuttle.
