Good solution! That will save you a few close encounters.
I would be really leary of using wire ties in the temporary solution to attaching the bases. UV will dry those out in a very short time. I would defer to U Bolts or hose clamps. If they shatter when you are at high speed, those wands could leave a pretty serious crease in the hood.
