Back in the 50s era, you could get a dolly that goes under the A-frame that takes all the tongue weight off the tow vehicle's hitch. It's hard to find any pics of these on the 'net. I think they came as an accessory and were made by various manufacturers such as the Slimp dolly, Conley & True dolly and Watson dolly. I believe it was the Watson dolly that was used in The Long, Long Trailer movie.
The only photo I could just find is the Watson dolly on a couple of 50s race car trailers. There is this youtube vid with the Conley and True dolly on a 50s Spartan TT.

here. You'll find old photos of TTs being towed by cars and station wagons without signs of the rear of the TV sagging because they have these dollies.

Ya, they would have had a ball in the old days before internet forums and even Good Sam, with the norm in trailer pulling like this..And no broken axles and bent frames.
