Spoon, not to nit pick, but twice in this post you said that in the days of old they made it to their destination safely. This implies that they were safe from point A to point B. Maybe it's just semantics, but you should have chosen a different word to make your point -- like "alive".

Again... what is your definition of safely? To me, if someone makes it to the destination without injury or death and without crashing, they have gotten there safely.
They got from point A to point B without crashing or hurting/killing themselves, it was safe. I don't recall a massive backlash against travel trailers, or a huge sell off of them after a single trip. That would lead me to believe that people weren't so scared of pulling them that they never traveled again.
The point is SAFETY... not comfort or convenience. Everyone rails against half tons as UNSAFE on this particular forum. When someone requests proof that a vehicle is unsafe, the common reply is, "Let me know where you are driving so I am far away". It is fear mongering with no data behind it.
If half ton trucks are so unsafe, it should be fairly easy to find a dozen recent stories about a half ton truck towing a trailer up to its max tow rating that was involved in a crash due to a mechanical failure (other than tire) on behalf of the tow vehicle.
My father-in-law drives a Chevy 2500 (his work truck) and tows about 6000 lbs with it. It is OBVIOUSLY within all its weight specs. My mother-in-law would feel 100% uncomfortable driving it. She would be white knuckled... she would feel like she is being pushed around when the wind blows... she would feel that the brakes aren't adequate. That doesn't make it unsafe... that simply means that a person who shouldn't be towing in the first place is uncomfortable towing.
SAFETY is the word being thrown around... SAFETY. No proof of any safety issues are provided to support that theory.
