Common sense needs to be used and unfortunately history has proven it does not exist far to often. The drivers that scare me are the ones who grossly overload a halfton and states it tows great, in an effort to prove the guy who went with a 3/4 ton was an idiot, for spending so much on a truck.
I bought a 1999 Suburban K2500 (7.4L, 3.73 gears) in 2004 as my wife's daily driver and our tow vehicle for the 6,000 lb. fully-loaded trailer in my signature. It towed the TT great. I then sold my Ford Ranger and bought a 2000 Dodge Ram (5.9L, 3.55 gears) so I could tow the TT when I went RVing without the family. The difference in towing was really evident when going up hills and at the gas pump.
So when the wife wanted to go back to a small car, I thought about it and decided to trade in the Dodge and keep the 'Burb. The difference in towing made the decision for me. Never regretted my decision.
Just retired the 'Burb a couple of months ago as it had 227K miles on it and was just worn out.
