I hate to break this to you, but marketing and politics are deeply involved in all automotive designs. The US government is penalizing manufacturers for not reducing fuel use in new vehicles. But they give the manufacturers free credits to offset those penalties if they build electric vehicles.
As is often mentioned: "If you subsidize something you get more of it, if you tax it you get less of it." Government is subsidizing electric vehicles and taxing non-electric vehicles. So manufacturers build vehicles that most people don't want in order to build ones that people do want.
No engineering involved other than ordering the engineers to build something that they know is poorly thought out. If you have the money you can hire an engineer to design a steel framed aircraft for you. He may keep his thoughts to himself while he pockets your cash.
