I built a generator tent

Years ago I had a Desert Fox toy hauler. (2003-2009)

A few times I camped, it rained. I wasn't too keen on placing the generator under the rig to keep it out of the rain due to the carbon monoxide issue, but I did it a few times.

My solution was to build a little tent frame out of PVC pipe and cover it with something.
I had some Tyvek housewrap from left over from re-siding my house, so I cut a piece and used it as the cover.

Here's the video showing the assembly of it
  • Utility and construction companies have umbrella style tents for their equipment when they are run in wet weather, so this idea has merit. The trick is building something that is easy to deploy and stow, allows ventilation and can withstand wind and snow loads.

The generator used under this cover is quiet, so additional noise dampening is really not required. If you were running a contractor style generator, I would agree to some point to add baffles. If I am boon docking, I expect generator noise. If I am in a campground, I look for hook ups to run my electrics.
  • It's a clever idea, but lots of guys here will tell you that it's wholly unnecessary. Generators are designed to be run during power outages and on job sites in all kinds of nasty weather.
  • It would be even better if you built a noise enclosure for it. That'd keep the rain off the generator and the noise off your neighbors :).
