There are lots of ST tires out there , look at all the grass cutting guys , small utility trailers , and travel trailers . Heres the difference , most of the small trailers are running under weight for short periods and under speed . Where travel trailers , well they are for trips . they are running for long periods in the vacation time of the hot summer , they are generally running close to maximum weight and running at or above max speed . WHY are there so many discussions about ST tire failures on rv , hot rod , horse , and boat websites , And very few on the landscape sites ? Because , boats ,cars, horses and rvs are heavy and run the highways , where the landscapers run local and light mowers arent that heavy .
I run ST tires on light local trailers single axle , but when I have weight and running at highway speeds those trailers run a LT tire all my double axle . Its not because what I have read on websites , but from experience . 30 years of pulling trailers I have had my share of failures , ( I even got my own tire machine ) . I needed tires , all I had were some used truck tires in the shop , I mounted them up , it was the first set of tires that wore out on my trailer before they failed . So I started switching , and I havent had a tire failure in over 6 years . It use to be a monthly ordeal.
I never read on any website where LT tires have failed on a trailer .
I have owned 3/4 ton and 1 ton trucks for over 30 years , work trucks , NEVER had a tread separate or a tire bulge on LT tires . ( I wasnt nice to my trucks at times)
I have a group of guys (6) , long time friends with trailers , all are very mechanical and anal about their equipment , ALL have lost ST tires on their TT due to failures in the past 5 years . All have switched to LT tires .
I wont run my equipment at maximum rpm and max load all day , I wont run a tire at or close to its max load and speed all day . (especially in the heat) Running a ST tire on my highway trailers I wont do it , too close to the edge .
