One person posted a PDF of towing speed limits by state, but that document appears to be out of date. Multiple other sources list towing speed limits of 70 or 75 mph in many states. For example, Kansas 70, Colorado 75, Wyoming 75, Utah 75, Michigan 70, Missouri 70. Here is one such website:

If states have declared it safe to tow at those speeds, then with a proper rig and the right driving skills it should be safe, no?
As for fuel economy, I did mention my interest in a popup. So it might go down from 18 mpg @ 65 to, what, maybe 15 mpg @ 75? I'd still be beating 3/4 of the RV owners nationwide on fuel economy.
Yes, the tires should have enough load capacity. But I was postulating a small, lightweight trailer. Let me be more specific: a 2500 lb (loaded) pup with 14" wheels... standard all-season P tires are generally rated for about 1530 lb each, or 3060 lb total. Speed rating "T", or 118 mph.
Other than tires, the big safety issues are sway and stopping, correct? If the trailer has proper weight % on the tongue and a sway control hitch to boot, there should be no sway. And how often are we called upon to stop on the freeway? Trailer brakes should do their job when called upon.
Do you still think it's way too unsafe?
