True enough, but that statement by itself does not exist in a vacuum. When I hook my travel trailer to my truck, I am in fact adding 4000 pounds to the overall weight. I agree with you so far.
But....BUT.... I am also adding four more contact patches, and four more brakes that are in fact powerful enough to lock and slide the those contact patches on dry pavement ( if I dial the brake controller too high ).
So as I said earlier, we must also consider the "trailer brakes are intended to brake the trailer"....and the "truck brakes are intended to slow or stop the truck".
