According to Ram Bodybuilders
The equivalent model 2014 2500 has a GVWR of 10,000 lbs.
The 2013 and 2014 3500's have a GVWR of 11,700 lbs.
The NEW Ram 2500 frame is stronger than previous years... but it's not like the old days when the only difference between the Ram 2500 and 3500 was the rear springs. Now there is a big difference between the 2500 and 3500... including the 2014 model.

I think that WAS true of the 2013s. Maybe not so for 2014s, where the 2500s also get the new three link front end - same as the 2013 3500s. That's why the 2014 2500s got such a jump on specs (GVWR, Towing, and GCWR) over the 2013 2500s.
My theory is that they had to "use up" the remaining frames, so they did so with the 2500s, and had the 3500s on the new frame first (for bragging rights in ads).
