Illegal Towing.... Triple Towing

Just got back from a county campground in northern Wisconsin. On our way out on Sunday I was walking to the trash can and an guy in his class A yelled out the window "How do you like this setup". He quickly got out and showed me his setup. It was a smaller class A, an 4 place ATV trailer and then a 2 place PWC trailer. Pretty sure neither of the trailer had brakes.

I just said you are triple towing and how does it tow. He responded "pretty good!. It's only 64', I've got 1' to spare".

I just walked away without saying how illegal this is in my state. After thinking about it on the drive home I remember seeing someone triple towing a boat behind a popup at this same campground last year.

Does anyone else see illegal double or triple towing in their state?
  • It is legal to double tow in Wisconsin, although it is called triple tow in the regs, I don't think it means 4 vehicles.
  • From what I have gathered by reading, it seems that it legal there if under 65'. Im not so sure on the trailers requiring brakes, but for sure I wouldn't do it without them. If something goes wrong they could save you from a wreck. So what is legal and what is safe are not necessarily the same.
  • I checked two different sources and it appears that WI does allow double towing on "select highways" with a maximum length of 60'. Might want to consult your state laws.....
Double towing is legal in at least 39 states and lengths vary from 60' to 90'........
