Illiniois License Plate and Driver's License

Hi guys,

I was hoping someone with experience could help me figure out the Illinois license plate and drivers license rules. I have a 2013 GMC Sierra 2500 HD and a 8,000# toy hauler that will sometimes be 10,000 when it's loaded down. Anyone know if I can do this with a class D drivers license and B Truck plates?

Thanks in advance for the help,

Jason
  • My X has regular P plates on it, the X had a GVWR of 8900lbs. The trailer is registered at 10k lbs. i have the same DL as you. Never a problem!
  • Driver's License Classifications
Illinois driver's licenses are classified by the GVWR of a vehicle (and any towed
    vehicles):
Class A — Any combination of motor vehicles with a GCWR of 26,001 pounds or more,
providing the GVWR of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds. Also
allows for operation of Class B, C and D vehicles.
Class B — Any single motor vehicle with a GCWR of 26,001 pounds or more, or any
such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds. Also allows for operation of
    Class C and D vehicles.
Class C — Any motor vehicle with a GVWR of more than 16,000 pounds, but less than
26,001 pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds. Also
allows for operation of Class D vehicles.
Class D — Any motor vehicle with a GVWR of 16,000 pounds or less. Does not include
    A. B, C, L or M vehicles.
Class L — Any motor-driven cycle with less than 150cc displacement.
Class M — Any motorcycle or motor-driven cycle.

  • @ campinginthewoods,

You missed one which is rather important to us RVers.

RT (Recreational Trailer) license plates cost $31 per year and expire on 31 December.

Most of the clerks at Illinois SOS don't know this.
  • Campinginthewoods has the operators classes correct. Not sure of the GVWR of your truck, but I assume it is over 16k If so you need a Class C for any trailer and a Class B if it is over 10k.

I carry an IL Class A, non-CDL. See sig.

It is all here IL RoR Non-CDL Vehicles
