In regards to the Excursion, I did test drive one when I was searching for my Suburban. Sample size of one might not be enough to draw conclusions on, but it was enough for me.
While they may be the same size as the Suburban, they don't feel like it. To me, the Excursion felt huge - Queen Maryish - compared to the Suburban. That said, an Ex with a V10 would almost certainly be a better tow vehicle than a 1500 Burb. And it would likely be in the same or lower price point.
In regard to resale, the majority of the depreciation has already occured if you are looking at something in the $6k range. I don't think that should be a deciding factor between the two. If you buy something even close to "right", you should be able to sell it when you are done with very little depreciation.
