Infiniti qx80 Towing Opinions

We're looking at purchasing our first TV and trailer and need a few unbiased, experienced opinions our potential purchases.

TV:
We need an SUV rather than a full size truck. We have an infant and large dog, the wife won't put the dog in the back of an open truck and won't allow the dog to sit beside the baby in the truck. Only option left, dog in the back of SUV, baby in back seat.

I don't like American made vehicles (sorry those those I may have offended) so we've kind of landed on a Infiniti QX80. It has 8900 lbs in towing capacity.

Trailer:
We're looking for something with two rooms, so baby can sleep in her own space, in a crib. That allows us to stay up and watch TV or make a little noise without waking her.

We like the Kodiak 300 BSHL:
Length: 36'11"
Weight: 7551 lbs
Capacity: 1349 lbs

We'd be using a weight distribution hitch for sure. Is this too much trailer for the infiniti? It looks to be within it ability but just. I'm not sure that's a perfect situation. I really want to make sure we're towing safely.

I would welcome any suggestions on alternate trailers, or opinions on the unit outlined above.

Thanks
Josh
  • I agree that's too much trailer. That's a very large trailer and a short wheelbase tow vehicle. With the hitch weight, you'll easily be overloaded on payload. I have no doubts the Infiniti "could" pull it, it just wouldn't be comfortable, and possibly unsafe.

If you have a bias against American vehicles (understood, they made terrible cars for years) you may want to take a second look at the new generation of American large SUV's. The new Escalade/tahoe/suburban/Yukon is an excellent vehicle. The same can be said for the aging, but recently refreshed, Expedition with Ecoboost power.

I owned an Infiniti before my truck (2007 G35X), had no complaints. I was in the same boat as you with a certain bias towards foreign. The recent advances of American manufacturers is impressive.

One of the reasons I bought my TT was for when an infant comes into the picture for our family. There is a separate front bunk room that would be a great kids room. Not many windows to keep light down, and away from the noise.
  • X2 on something smaller. That trailer is getting into 2500 territory. Can the infinity's soft suspension and hitch handle the weight of 1000lbs of tongue? I think yoi need to look much smaller and ignore that so called 8900lb tow rating. If you want foreign, maybe a toyota sequoia with the v8.
  • Thanks for the replies.
What size trailer do you think would be appropriate for an infiniti qx80?
  • X2 really long trailer for a short wheel base vehicle.

Also you are most likely going to be over weight by the time you load the TT, add propane and batteries, etc.
