Info on TPMS for 06 Ford Explorer

Hello
Just bought my 4th Explorer a 06 XLT 4.0L 4x4 and the TPMS sensor gave a warning on dash (not the low air light). I took it to Firestone to get 4 new tires (it was on a spare) and they said one of the sensors was bad and quoted me a price of 200 to fix/replace it. I have been looking and see there is a valve sensor and a banded sensor (I think I have the banded one). Which parts besides sensor need replacement and can I use aftermarket like Dorman, etc or should I stick with OEM parts and what is the approx. price of part. I think they are charging too much but want to confirm this and see what my options are. I read elsewhere that they have a battery life of 10 years/150K and when needing service close to those figures its best to replace all as preventative maintenance. Is that an accurate statement?

Thanks

Thanks

Look at your valve stem, that will determine what system you have.

The band mounted sensors use a rubber valve stem.
Stem mounted sensors have a hex headed nut holding the stem on.

The sensors run around $50 each. To reset the sensor will require the vehicle to be driven for about 5 miles.

    OEM is always the best.

Ford now has 3 types of sensors

  • Depends on if the band and cradle are destroyed, aftermarket is ok. Parts plus mount and balance 1 tire. 99% sure you have a banded one.
