You should be ok to mount sideways even with a DVR. Hard drives can be mounted horizontally or vertically. Just don't totally block the vents. Those things get pretty warm on the inside. If you do mount it sideways, just make sure it's secure. Sudden movements, like from it tipping over, is enough to destroy the drive if it's writing.
