Not sure what State you live in, but here we pay tax on the purchase price not the list price on the sticker.
If sticker is $40,000 and there are $2,500 in rebates and say the dealer knocks $1,500 off you pay taxes on $36,000 not the $40,000. Now if you put a down payment of say $20,000 you still pay tax on the down payment money.
If you get Sears to knock off $200 on a $2,200 refrigerator you would pay tax on the $2,000 not the $2,200 right? Why would a car be different?
