Hi,
As a battery ages, it may end up with "hard" sulfate on the plates. This reduces the available capacity of the battery.
Example:
100 amp-hour battery charging profile might be similar to this:

orange 14.4 volts
red 13.6 volts
blue 13.2 volts.
But if the battery is 50% sulfated then it would only have 50 amp-hours available. So it would appear to reach fully charged quite quickly.
