- mkirschNomad IIThose 12V blow dryers, heck, any of those 12V appliances that involve HEAT, are complete wastes of money.
Sure it only draws 14A. That's 168 Watts at 12 Volts. It would be more effective if you blew on her head with your nostrils to dry her hair.
If she absolutely has to have a hair dryer the only practical way in your case is to run the generator. You don't have room for an inverter, let alone the batteries it would take to run a usable dryer without completely discharging your battery bank. - Carb_CleanerExplorerHere's my install, on the side of the battery box. I still haven't put in the transfer switch or remote. One day. I've been busy with our new house and all the moving, painting, hardwood floors, 2nd laundry room, wall removal, new kitchen, yard renovation, etc., for the past while. I haven't checked in to RV.net for a spell. Hope you're doing well.

EDIT: I think a gal with long, wet hair is sexy. - towproExplorerwow, Just realized it will take most of what my honda 2000 produces just to run a hair dryer.

I am looking to mainly run a hair dryer for my wife, so right now looking at the xantrex prosine 1000watt. What is the smallest watt hair dryer you can get. Would love to go 300 watt morninstart but don't think it has wnough juice. Not sure if I can get away with putting it under the sink or out of sight due to it needing air to breath. I like the idea of putting inside mounted to the battery box like towpro mentioned. Pretty sure the 850 and 840 are similar. I think I have enough room but worry about proper ventilation. towpro what inverter are you looking at putting in?
Thanks
Nolan
You are going to need a 2,000 watt inverter with at least 4 batteries to run a hair drier that you wife will like. - joeshmoeExplorer

Nolan, search internet on 12v hair dryer. camping world has one, uses 14amp for $17.00 :). unless you need the AC for something else you can't beat that price.
I bought that one for my wife off Amazon a couple years ago. She's tried several 12V dryers. The one thing none of them do is produce enough heat. They all suck. AND that Roadpro pulls about 15A. Low wattage, but relatively high amp draw= still wet hair, diminished batteries and an unhappy wife (not necessarily in that order). Don't waste your money. Her hair is long and thick. Even with a regular, A/C powered dryer, depending on the humidity, it takes her at least 20 mins. to fully dry it.
Believe me, I've been holding off installing an inverter for the exact same reason. She groans about it every time we use the camper. For the time being, I have to fire up the generator. When that's not possible, she turns on the furnace, sits on the step, leans over and uses the ducts below the frig. Works pretty good and it's quick, but obviously, not ideal...for her. I have no problem with it.:B
I may install an inverter anyway just to have it. - towproExplorer

I haven't gotten that far yet. I have one that I have been using under the seat of my truck to run Laptops, I will try it first to see if its enough power so I know where to start (still need the power in my truck for laptops).
My TV is 12V, so all I need to run is the Sat receiver and hopefully the Pathway X2 Dish I been waiting to afford. - Camper_Jeff___KNomad IIII would mount the inverter as close to the batteries as possible keeping the wires short and properly fusing for the gauge of wire you use or smaller. Isn't there a propane hair dryer available?
- joeshmoeExplorerOkay, just read you want it for a hair dryer. That will require at 800-1500 watts. According to my wife, the small dryers don't work all that great. She has a lot of hair and has tried a lot of dryers. With her current Conair on the "warm" setting, I know it pulls about 800 watts. On high, over 1700 watts.
With that much demand, I think your only choice is to mount it near the battery box, in order to keep the cables short near the batteries. The basement fan could be wired to a manual switch for ventilation. Not sure how much or little air that small fan moves. Probably not a lot. Maybe look at upgrading to a higher CFM. - joeshmoeExplorerHey Nolan,
I "installed" a 400 watt inverter up in the charging center cabinet and plugged into the 12V outlet. Really, it's the only accessible place I could come up with to keep it portable and without running extra cable. Unfortunately, the 850's battery box is not much of an option, IMO. Totally out of the way, unlike the 840.
For the few A/C items I run in the camper, it works good enough.
The other place I considered.
