Inverter/converter draw

Those if you that keep your campers plugged in during the winter to keep batteries topped off.... if everything is turned off in the camper what's the drain or draw of electricity the inverter draws? Is it noticeable on your home electric bill?
  • I have always brought my Trojan T105 batteries in to my basement at the end of my camping season. They are fully charged on my three stage charger then connected to two small 6V trickle chargers.

Benefits include:No ongoing corrosion of the wiring or metal frame in the battery box on the camper.
I can keep an easy eye on the water levels.
I never have to worry about the batteries discharging or freezing. Even if I lost power for a month the basement will be above freezing. They are too expensive to take the risk!
  • Ours is hooked up continuously when at home on a dedicated 30A circuit. Never noticed an increase in our bill since running the line, so I guess it's a minor expense.
  • There was no noticeable increase in our electric bill. Like you I thought I would keep the TT plug in to keep the battery and phantom loads powered up.

The biggest problem is worrying about a long power outage or the TT being accidentally unplugged in the winter and the phantom loads drawing the battery down in freezing weather. This year I will bring the battery in for the winter.
  • We keep our rig plugged in 24/7 when stored in our back yard but have never measured the draw. Only time we notice a bump in our electric bill is when we have the fridge on during the camping season and that is maybe $15 or so.

I would imagine that since battery is already charged that draw is pretty negligible in terms of it showing a significant difference in your winter electric bill as long as no other power hungry items are on at the time.

Of course we monitor battery fluid levels periodically, but our Iota DLS IQ4 converter does a great job keeping batteries topped off with very little water loss. Our 6 volt Interstate batteries from Samsclub are still providing good service after 5 years of use.
