Possible Reasons for Fire in Inverter/UPS

1. Low quality Batteries with broken or non-ceramic fume filters are more likely to catch fire.
2. Input voltage fluctuation my cause internal component failure in the long run and result in MOSFET blast.
3. Inverter with Low Quality base in Printed Circuit Board (PCB) and Undersized tracks may create short circuit and lead to fire.
4. High Room temperature and Dumb inverter that gives constant high charge current even at 40°C temperature.
5. Inverter with Low quality Internal relay & no auto cutoff function when using excess load.

Inverter is no more fire hazard than those 12 volt appliances. Inverter probably less hazard.

My 12v connector is only rated 8 amps. Good for USB charging only.

If an owner has some solar charging and increased battery capacity, either 12V or 120V power is available and free.
Using an inverter and a transfer switch is probably easier to install than wiring for large draw 12V devices. About the only downside is having enough battery capacity.

I thought that inverters were very common at least for the entertainment center for some time. Both our first coach, a 1990 Bounder and the Winnie have had them as standard equipment. I did convert all the entertainment center to 12 volt units but I'm sure there is something we could use them for. Charging the laptops is one.

Choosing to ignore your caustic remarks I will just address the reality of your 12-volt assertions. Few if any campers have 12-volt outlets available, certainly none that would support the current needed to power "appliances". Most only have a 12-volt plug next to the TV antenna which might power a 12-volt TV but only if it has the same dedicated plug which are a different size from standard 12-volt plugs.

I would be interested in seeing some links to all these wonderful 12-volt appliances you refer to. I have one of the 12-volt hair dryers that I bought years ago when I was ignorant about how things work. I still sits on a shelf in my garage and brings a chuckle when I notice it. Sorry, but the standard today is 120-volt appliances and equipment. Even if you can find a comparable 12-volt piece of equipment you will pay a premium for a mostly inferior product.

All campers already have 120-volt infrastructure in place which means, depending on how the inverter is connected, you have power available almost everywhere in the camper. Even though there are losses associated with inverter power they are nowhere near the 10 to 15 percent you state.

Post some links and proof of your assertions.

The question is"Inverters Why?"

1) Since installing an inverter 8 years ago in our TC,( now our TT), dry/boondock camping 98% of the time, we have eliminated the need for a generator, which we still carry along" just in case".

2) We use many of the simple 120V appliances that are at home. (magic bullet, blender, hair dryer, camera battery charger, toaster, etc.)

3) TT batteries are being maintained by inverter all winter as solar panels are under 2' of snow and converter is disabled.

4) We can pop popcorn, make margaritas, grind coffee, use the micro, etc. at state and national parks before and after and during generator times.

5) 120V appliances through an inverter aren't the only things that will draw down batteries. Having had a 12V compressor fridge for close to 6 years and using our 12V RV furnace fan in cold weather, these are 12V appliance that will kill batteries in short order when dry/boondock camping if you do not have a good way of putting back the AH's.

6) Having an inverter so after a shower she can dry her hair with the 950W hair dryer after an 8 hr day hike climbing from Catalina SP to the top of Mt. Lemon is one of the simplist ways of keeping my hiking partner of 39 years.


With our small and large inverters, 4 6V GC-2's, 490W solar, LED's everywhere, independence from the genny and power pole is really quite simple.

You didn't bother to read my post pointing out that the so called "quality" 12V appliances are junk.

They ARE TOYS and nothing more.

None of the 12V appliances I pointed out have enough wattage to make LARGE meals in a REASONABLE TIME.

FOOD SAFETY IS KEY.

With flee power wattages it takes a long time to get the internal temps of food high enough to kill unwanted bacteria.

The inverters present no more (and most likely LESS) "fire hazard" than cooking with your so called high quality 12V appliances..

I will also point out that most "campers" tend to not use electrical cooking appliances, instead opting for more efficient methods like using the propane powered stove and oven built into pretty much every RV.

As far as calling some of the posters responding to your rants as "idiots", perhaps YOU need to take a good look at yourself in a good non RV mirror.. Your ranting on like a lunatic spouting off like a spoiled child..

Perhaps you could point out from real news sources all of those RVs fires which were caused by someone using a inverter instead of mindlessly ranting untrue allegations..

I get it, that you don't like when others camp with more comfort than you, hey, it IS a free world for folks to camp they way they want to.

If you WANT OTHERS to fully rough it, why are you using a hard sided RV?

You camp the way you want and let others camp the way they want to.

Perhaps you could put your money where your rant is and get rid of your hardsided RV, pitch a pup tent, build a campfire to keep warm and cook and perhaps a candle or hurricane lamp to read some ancient writings carved in stone.

Perhaps get rid of your cellphone, tablet, PC while camping, if YOU have them along with you then YOU are "pampered" also like the folks you despise. You do realize that the Lithium batteries in those devices can also cause fires..

By the way, learned way back in grade school the there IS something called "paragraphs".. It breaks up the text into easier to read sections with related thoughts put together. Perhaps use them, your lack of usage of them makes it appear that it is written by a kindergarten kid..

So I see you do get it. They want to use there 110 appliances and continue to enjoy keep their rolling condos without buying all new 12 volt appliances. With an inverter they can continue to use the appliances and media devices they already have.
Coupled with a good solar set up, they can be generator free for days, and still enjoy the benefits of A.C. power.
