Is it ok to drive with the bed mat and no tailgate?

Yes. I've been doing that for over 10 years since I rarely put the tailgate back on between trips and never take the bed mat out.

To clean the truck bed, I flip the bed mat back, clean the front, then slowly put it back in place. Finally repeat with the back half. Clean truck bed and never lifted much of the bed mat weight.
