Is it ok to drive with the bed mat and no tailgate?

my mat must be different, its also fills the area ahead of and behind the fender wells, no way I am pulling that thing out.

But I did have one of them foldup ground mats stuffed in between the side of camper and bed, and it came out along highway one day.
