Is it ok to drive with the bed mat and no tailgate?

I never put the tailgate back on my truck, never had a problem with the bed mat even at highway speeds. I drove from Mi to southern Oh to go get my new camper, no problems with the mat. I used to worry about it but I've done it enough times now that I don't even think about it anymore.
