Is it safe to use normal garden hose for water??

I would feel safer using a food grade hose (white). When I smell the first water coming out the garden hose, it reminds me of the industrial chemical smell that floats in urban India. The synthetic material carried by the water might be ok or it might be toxic.

The only way that would be acceptable would consist in letting water run for a long time, and even then, who knows if toxic compounds don't seep out on a continuous basis?
