You don't need a truck for the size of TT you are thinking of but you should definately consider a larger SUV. It doesn't have to be a big full size either. There are several mid size SUVs out there that would fit your towing needs better and open your options on TTs. For example the Toyota Highlander or V6 4Runner, Jeep Liberty and Cherokee, Ford explorer all have tow ratings in the 5K range. Trailers with 3k dry weights will be pushing the limits of these as well once loaded. Even better would be the V8 Dodge Durango, pre 2010 V8 4Runner, and VW Touareg. Still somewhat compact in size but are rated up to 7K towing. I wouldn't tow anywhere near the max for any of those vehicles but they can handle considerably more than what you have. Keep in mind as well that they are all SUVs that have short wheel bases, which is not ideal for towing longer trailers(think sway control).
