GG, if you're not comfortable with a larger vehicle, it is possible that you won't feel comfortable towing, either. Maybe, maybe not.
I would be fine TOWING something, in MY vehicle, the reason why I dont like bigger vehicles is the CAB is too big for me, the entire front end is so wide, I literally feel like i'm driving a semi truck! But if I was towing with my Escape, nothing would change, i'd still be driving the same size vehicle I am a good fit for.
So trying it out before buying would be a great idea. Do you have any relatives, friends of relatives, anybody who owns a trailer you could borrow? Or maybe even borrow their entire rig for a short tryout?
I do have a friend, the one with the Explorer who is towing a Skyline Bobcat 186B (one of their bigger models), but I haven't had a chance to give that a shot, he hasn't offered to let me try driving it because i'm only home for a week every other month and during that week he works til 11pm and that late he doesn't want to be dealing with hooking up his trailer and taking it out for me to test drive in the dark! lol Probably not a good idea!
One of the people over on Fiberglass RV (not the couple mentioned previously) was proud of his towing an egg trailer with a small car... I think it was a VW, though not positive now... but at some point he looked underneath and was shocked to see that the hitch was ripping the sheet metal underside of his car! He stopped doing that.
Yeah that would SUCK. But something tells me for every person who has a bad experience like that, there is another lucky person who has never had any issues with similar situations.
If you put on a weight-distribution hitch or a sway bar, you have to add the weight of those toward the 350 allowable lbs. Most WD hitches weigh close to 100 lbs.
Eek!! This gets more complicated all the time! Hmm. That is a bummer.
