Is my Ford Escape worthless for fullfilling my dream? :-(

If the Escape didn't have the towing package to begin with you will have way less than 3500 lbs. Probably around 2000 lbs after adding the hitch and such.

Also, in the "Escape City" link he mentions: "Note - I did put on a Class III hitch receiver knowing I was likely going to exceed the max hitch weight of a standard Class II (300 lbs)". Not sure if his Escape had the towing package.
