Just to be sure that you understand, The GVWR on your Escape is what Ford is saying is that is the maximum weight you Escape can weigh. It does not include the trailer except the amount that the trailer tongue weight will add to your Escape.
I admit I am horrible at math so the more numbers get thrown at me, the more confused I get. Maybe i'm just not smart enough to do this.
There's not much for math. GVWR is simply how much weight you can have sitting on all 4 of your Escape's tires combined (i.e. when you park it on a scale). It weighs something less than its GVWR when it's empty but when you add people, gear, fuel, and a trailer tongue it all combines toward the GVWR "budget".
Its tow rating is independent of that GVWR number. Tow rating is how much the trailer you pull can weigh by itself. When you add the trailer and the Escape together it's called GCW (gross combined weight).
