There's not much for math. GVWR is simply how much weight you can have sitting on all 4 of your Escape's tires combined (i.e. when you park it on a scale). It weighs something less than its GVWR when it's empty but when you add people, gear, fuel, and a trailer tongue it all combines toward the GVWR "budget".
Its tow rating is independent of that GVWR number. Tow rating is how much the trailer you pull can weigh by itself. When you add the trailer and the Escape together it's called GCW (gross combined weight).
Yeah I understand all that, but even simple addition confuses me sometimes HAHA! I mean i'm taking the weight of the car plus the weight of the trailer plus the tongue weight plus the weight of everything i'm going to put in there plus the weight of the actual hitch itself, and I don't even know how much my Escape weighs by itself either!
