That's exactly what I said, only in different words! Those other numbers get confusing though, there's too many of them to remember. People have told me before (not in this forum) to just look at the GVWR and make sure the trailer I choose weighs less than that. Maybe i've been misled by other people too, clearly there are many different opinions on how to do this correctly.
But it isn't exactly what you said. When you used different words, they had a different meaning! Again, GVWR has nothing to do with the weight of the trailer. The towing capacity is what you look at. GVWR is only considered if you have a lot of tongue weight and/or lots of gear in the back of the Escape. This isn't just a "different opinion". This is the way the manufacturers specify it.
